Dr. Shehan has been in practice with the group since 1987. He
originally obtained his high school education in Winston-Salem NC and then attended the
University of North Carolina both as an undergraduate and for his dental education
Following that he trained at a hospital dental program in Norfolk, VA at DePaul Hospital
and then returned to Winston Salem where he did an anesthesia residency at Bowman Gray
School of Medicine/Baptist Hospital Following that residency program he then obtained his
training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in
Charleston and returned to Winston-Salem, which is his home town to establish his
practice.
Dr. Shehan obtained his board certification in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1989 and
has remained current and up-to-date in both his continuing education and training
parameters throughout that period of time. His main area of interest within the specialty
of oral and maxillofacial surgery is orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, implant surgery
and cleft palate surgery.
Dr. Shehan currently serves as the oral and maxillofacial surgeon on the cleft palate team
at Forsyth Memorial Hospital and Novant Healthcare. Dr. Shehan also maintains an
instructorship in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and BLS (Basic
life-support). Dr. Shehan is currently an active member in both the American
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Dental Society. He has
also held office and he has participated in many local study groups and local societies,
both medical and dental.
Dr. Shehan has also spoken extensively both locally and nationally on topics including
orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, trauma, management of infection and surgical
complications, implants, and basic oral and maxillofacial surgery techniques.
